I am so giddy. We are less than 24 hours from the start of it and the excitement is setting in. My work schedule has been arranged to make watching the matches live a reality, chairs put into right spots and a trip to HEB for noms is in the future.

I hear ya!! The watering hole I hang out at, which is one of your national casual chain restaurants as opposed to a place like Fado or Flying Saucer, has already auto-tuned the main tv in the bar for every game that is on during thier open hours. Any conflicts automatically go on one of the smaller tv's. And for someone like me who started playing this game as a little kid in 1971, when most kids my age did not even know what soccer was, it does my heart good to see it getting more popular with each passing year.

In reply to: That is a good question. If I was a member, it is because I was registered by default with a team I played for or a referee's or coach's organization I was part of who fell under the AYSO umbrella. I don't recall ever registering myself individually. |

I am not really sure why the games have been so tense. My guess is that the talent gap has narrowed somewhat over the past 2-3 world cups, and not even the big teams can afford to take that many risks. It has taken a lot of the spark out of the games so far. The games have been lackluster at best. The only group to shine so far have been the refs.

Uruguay's Luis Suarez is a piece of shit. Seriously, he's the worst sort of soccer player--short on ability, and long on acting. He's been diving all over the pitch today, and his latest effort got the South African keeper sent off for the touch of a toe.

I don't see how that was a dive. The keeper made no play on the ball, he hit both of Suarez' feet, it was a pretty clear penalty. Did Suarez embellish a little? Sure he did. But he didn't need to. It was going to be a penalty, and there was going to be a red card.

In reply to: Replay showed he was offside because Forlan's through-ball took a deflection off a teammate and then ricocheted toward Suarez--a very important detail. You do realize that if a teammate touches or redirects the ball and the attacker has moved beyond the next-to-last defender, he is now offside regardless of his position when the original pass was made, right? And the attacker created the contact, which was nothing more than a tap on the toe, by deliberately dragging his left foot. The keeper made a play for ball but was indeed late. Still, Suarez could've easily moved by/over him. He instead chose to "create the contact"--a la Kobe Bryant--and go to ground. Suarez had already dove several times in the match; the PK was just the culmination of his acting for the day. Sad that a soft-minded match referee didn't object to awarding him the Oscar. |

The first round of group play is in the books, and perhaps the biggest story to date is the general lack of scoring. In addition to most corners and crosses behaving benignly, not a single direct free kick has gone for goal.

In reply to: Since the U.S. and England tied, the Slovenians are guaranteed of going through if they win tomorrow, regardless of the outcome of their match with England. A draw isn't entirely undesirable for the U.S., but it would create a must-win situation for the final group match versus Algeria. Even then, our Nats wouldn't be assured of advancement--there could conceivably be a three-way tie for first with England, Slovenia and the U.S. sitting on five points. Beating Slovenia won't be easy. For such a small country, they are very well organized defensively. Expect them to sit back and look for the counterattack. Though our backline is always cause for concern, I think this strategy could play to our favor because we are better than ever at creating chances. Ultimately, it'll come down to finishing--if we convert our chances into goals, we should prevail. In reply to: Agree 100 percent on Buddle! Findley is more of a spark; his passing and finishing are far too suspect for him to be deployed full time. Another alternative would be to start Dempsey behind Altidore in a 4-4-1-1 with Stuart Holden at right wing. I'd also like to see Torres on the pitch, and I wouldn't be surprised if Bradley starts him. |

Good morning Gem, someone is asleep at the switch down here and ESPN isnt blacked out so I am watching this snoozer on the WWLD. It is surprising how much better the coverage is this time. Yes it is pro US but you guys should hear the English announcers we get down here they are overtly and blatantly pro-England.

In reply to: I dunno. The Dutch were my darkhorse coming in to the Cup, but I've seen them in an entirely opposite light that you have. They were comatose today and seemed lost for the first 60 or so minutes against Denmark. But who knows? Italy never looked good in the 2006 Cup and went on to win the finals. |

The Dutch commentator, as you likely saw too, was down on the sides performance while the Wiggan coach said he liked what he saw. He said the Dutch were sticking in 1st gear because they have not needed to. They did not want to create space for the Japanese to counter or create. I think I recall that correctly.

Did I read the ticker right, Beck's got booed by a fan or something? Then it said England was filing a complaint with FIFA. Is it for that or did I read wrong and it's something else? Beckham has thick skin so I doubt that some jackhole boo'ing him would affect him. Maybe I should rest?

In reply to: If we were discussing any other country's soccer fans, I would be shocked. However, this is England ... Becks is beyond reproach, in my opinion. Sure, he's a bit of a prima dona and media vv#0r3, but he gives his all for his country and they are usually better for it. Beckham has the same "gestalt" effect for England that Zizou had for France. Look where both sides are without them. |

Ruud Van Nistleroy agrees with you. Beck's is top notch and a class act. The BS he dealt with from "fans" and media to include kidnapping attempts of his children is remarkable. He was classy and always performed to the best he could. He comes across to me as humble.

In reply to: Agree across the board, although I might change my mind if Brazil handles Ivory Coast this afternoon. I actually thought Brazil played well in its opener versus North Korea. Pundits are criticizing the Selecao's performance simply because the final score wasn't 5-0, but I think that attitude is disrespectful of the Koreans' effort--they didn't look like the 105th-ranked side in the world to me. |

In the last five minutes you pull this crap to get him kicked out whne there is basically no way you come back today. What a bunch of fools. |

I really wish replay could be used after the game to retroactively lift a suspension from Kaka and award a suspension for diving. Replay can already be used to punish referees for making bad calls. Why not punish players who would otherwise get away with it? It would do wonders for the sport. Just think how much less diving there would be if every player knew they could get punished at one time or another. Even if you get away with a dive in-match, there are cameras everywhere, and you WILL get caught and punished eventually.

Chile is the only conmebol team I would worry about at this point, they must beat Switzerland, no draw because they will be facing a desperate Spain in the third match and you dont want to need any points then to advance. In fact Chile need to beat the Swiss by a good result as Spain may be needing a huge result themselves to advance on goal differential. That looks like a group where 6 points may not be enough to advance all on its own as three teams could end on that if everyone takes care of Honduras.

Just got word from my sister that ESPN3 is now blocked by the powers that be at her workplace. She works in a lab in a medical University complex. While it sucks that the entire facility and complex (not just her lab where she is a Post Doc) is cut off it goes to show how many were watching. I am sure many of the people there are not Americans but still, it's kind of cool.

In reply to: I missed the entire second half so I can only go by what I've seen on replay. Ruud Gullit has your back here, but I have to disagree. Here's a freeze frame from the replay available at ESPN's soccernet:
As you can see, only one Chilean is at risk of being offside--the one near the center, who ultimately receives the pass. However, note that he is even with the next-to-last Swiss defender (bottom right of screenshot) at the moment this video was frozen (the shade of the pitch is a dead giveaway). Even is onside. Additionally, the ball has already moved forward several meters from where it was first struck, and since the attacking Chilean is charging toward goal, we can only assume that he was further from goal when the ball was first struck. The next-to-last defender, however, is stopping his momentum and coming back in an attempt to trap the Chilean. Bottom line: this was a legitimate goal. The Swiss gambled on a trap and paid the price. This doesn't suggest the referee was correct in his other decisions, however. EDIT: Only cuz I wubs j00, Anaconda. |

Not having ESPN (damn FIFA and their exclusive rights) I can only go by what the Caribbean feed and the English announcers showed and it sure looked like there were two offsides on the goal play. |

Spain doing a fantastic Italy imitation today. Nice dives with overly dramatic performance when barely touched and wonderful forearms to the face before a set piece when ref is not looking. Asshat. THIS is another thing that would be cool to have reviewed and then penalized. Sorry, Villa, you won't be playing the next match.

The diving is getting so old. Im a huge fan of the game and watch it year round, but this is really disappointing. There are certainly dives in the MLS and EPL but this WC is the worst that I can remember. Its a beautiful game but constantly trying to trick the ref should not be part of it.

Just found out that our third world local tv station is only capable of getting one feed at a time off the satellite so even though we have two local channels who have exclusive rights to the World Cup we can only get one match at a time during the simultaneous games. One guess which match this England ex pat heavy nation is getting tomorrow at 9 a.m. |

Terrible marking from Mexico on that goal. As Suarez ran forward, his defender (Osorio) was near enough, but when Forlan passed to the right, the defender drifted in that direction and left Suarez all alone. Amazes me how even veterans forget their duties and start ball watching.

In reply to: I should correct myself here--two more goals to the differential in South Africa's favor wouldn't necessarily guarantee advancement for the hosts. Assuming goals scored were even, lots would be drawn. So, on that note, El Tri really needs to get on the board here, even if it ultimately loses to Uruguay. |

Right now Mexico are ahead by two on goal differential but tied on goals scored so Mexico want no part of ending in a tie in differential as that in all likelihood means S. Africa will have more goals scored.

Two days in a row of joyous results in the WC for me. I really wanted the Italy goal to be a good goal but disallowed. After all the cheating, the flopping, the histrionics and bullshit they have dealt out they would deserve this. In fact, they would deserve more but that would suffice for now. They don't have one ounce of credibility to complain but I promise you that their fans are doing just that. They have gotten so many phantom calls at opportune times that chicanery had to be involved. I relish in their misery today and hope it lasts for quite some time. Ha, ha freaking ha you dirty cheaters (soccer, not the people in general...lovely country, great food, culture and more).

Interesting. I just read a message sent ten minutes ago from an Italian friend of mine who lives there. (not a transplant) He says he is happy with the result. "they don't merit consideration from football lovers", is his quote. From what he was saying, fans are tired of the bullshit, the cheating and realize that likely the rest of the world is too. I guess they want them to earn it. They being people in his mindset.

In reply to: I don't doubt your friend said this, but I do doubt his sincerity. Were they so disgusted with their national side's negative tactics that they insisted on change en route to the 2006 trophy? Of course not. Let Italy suffer a few more disappointing Cups like this and we'll see just how magnanimous its fans are when it comes to their style of play. |

I agree. He does not root for the big 3 teams there either. His team is one of the ones victimized by the cheating scandals and the benefits the teams who did it got. So he is sort of bitter and disgusted. He also realizes that it is so deep and corrupt that maybe little can be done.

I'm in the minority here as I do like the Azzurri, having learned to appreciate soccer in Italia, so I am sad to see them play so poorly. It is an amazing thing to experience the passion of the World Cup there firsthand. The whole country shuts down when they play and they will watch the rest of the tournament with an empty feeling. Sort of like me watching the College World Series this year..to the 10th degree.

In reply to:Gem, i know you know this, but i will post anyway... That's because earning no points after the first game is a death blow. Teams were playing not to lose, and not playing to win. The second game the urgency is obviously there. The third game is more tactical depending on your position in group. Those numbers make complete sense. the big question is how could you structure the tournament, so that more games were like the second game in group play. i am too lazy to look it up, but of the 16 first round games, how many teams advanced after losing their first game? |

In reply to: Yes, if you had bothered to check the first pages in this thread, you would've seen that we discussed and lamented this unfortunate Cup reality. But it's good that you gave your fingers a workout! ;-) Seriously, I don't think you can change it, other than something subtle like making the first tiebreaker goals scored instead of goal differential. Also, I would counter that, though losing the first-round match is a statistical death sentence of sorts, such a result is not mere circumstance. There's a reason that team lost a match that it was trying to draw--it wasn't very good and, ultimately, it wasn't good enough advance. |

Since we cant get both at home I made the sportsbar run again this morning for the matches. Very disappointed in Portugal-Brazil. Ivory Coast dominated as expected but the deficit was just too much and as the 0-0 game went on they had to know that brazil and Portugal were going to just kick it around to a draw. Somewhat anticlimactic ending. I watched both matches in a bar full of Hondurans who work here on the island. Honduras deserved a goal for the tremendous counter attacking style they had and really hard luck to only get a draw. Spain were brilliant in the first half and even though red was a joke, the same player should have been red carded a few minutes earlier so in end justice was served. I cant really get on either team for kicking it around the last 15 minutes, you do what you have to given the situation.

In reply to: Every team with the exception of Honduras passes through to the next round. 5 out of the 8 groups first place is a American team including the USA. 2 are 2nd place qualifiers. Pretty good for Americas. Now if you think that 2 others (spain and portugal) speak Spanish or close to it (Portuguese) this is looking like a Spanish speaking (or at least understanding) world cup. |

In reply to: FW, i agree with you to an extent...but at the flip side one of the things that i've been considering during the WC is how the general american populace can consider a 1-0, 12 inning baseball game that takes close to 3.5 hours "thrilling" and an "ultimate pitchers duel" whereas a 1-0 soccer game that last a little under two hours is considered boring. i find soccer to be pretty much non stop...whereas baseball bores me to tears. |

I am more and more impressed with Forlan, he has been one of the top if not the top performers with his crosses, shots and set peices. Just an incredible weapon and he gift wrapped that for Suarez, who admittedly made a nice shot into an open net from a severe angle.

In reply to: He is one of my favorites and has been in scintillating form for months now. I know he washed out in the Premiership some time back (Man U, was it?), but he pretty much won the Europa Cup for Atletico Madrid and has been second only to Messi, in my opinion, at being disruptive and creating chances so far this tournament. |

Gem - I agree. Those are really the two instances where video review should be applied. The cost/benefit ratio of pausing to review a goal is worth the brief interruption in flow. As bad as it was for England, it's bad for soccer when millions of World Cup watchers, many of whom are not yet* dedicated soccer fans, witness that kind of injustice.

Also, while I think Maradona is a boob, I admire his passion and its sincerity. Although his tactics are poor, at the end of the day, he is a players' coach and they seem to enjoy playing for him. I hope for a great effort from both sides and will stand on my 3-2 Argentina prediction, but don't be surprised if I'm cheering for El Tri by game's end. |

Not sure what Robbie Van Persie was trying to do there. Seriously, if you're Holland and you're attacking, why wouldn't you insist on feeding the ball to Robben at some point and see what he can create, because he will create something?

Huge save there from Stekelenburg. More proof that placement is more important than power, especially from that range.

Pretty soft penalty, as Vittek clearly stuck his foot into Stekelenburg to draw it, but Holland victimized the Slovakians with some early dives, so I can't say it wasn't deserved. Besides, it was meaningless in the overall scheme of things; it just served as a final "FU" from Slovakia on its way out.

Not much possession in either team's attacking third. Most of the match is being played in midfield as neither side seems comfortable with the high pressure.

Unfortunately, it was too cold tonight in Johannesburg for the typical Brasilian fans to be out dancing in the flesh. However, I experienced it first hand at the '94 World Cup. My brother and I sat right behind a Brasilian drum section with gyrating bikini clad women at the Holland v Brazil quarterfinal in the Cotton Bowl. All told, that was one hell of an experience.

I was at that game as well. It might as well of been played on Mars. I could not believe how disinterested the Metroplex was in having the world cup. I remember being in the west end the night before (with about 40,000 of my closest Brazilian and dutch friends) and hearing the locals try and figure out what was going on. There was a Brasileira in front of me that still visits me in my dreams.

So, with one match left to play in the round of 16, teams from CONMEBOL are an improbable 13-2-4 (wins-losses-ties) in this competition, with three sides having already advanced to the quarterfinals. Only one CONMEBOL representative, Chile, has been eliminated, and that came courtesy of another South American side, Brazil. Chile is also the only CONMEBOL team to have lost.

Looks like I picked a good morning to take care of a ton of errands. I had to choose morning or afternoon match to miss and with Espana-Porto on tap it was an easy choice. Actually got to see the PK's at end and English announcers at least suggested Paraguay was better squad and deserved to go through.

Brazil completely lost its cool after that own-goal equalizer. Meanwhile, Holland seemed energized and responded with a beautiful gamewinner. Even then, there was plenty of time for Brazil to equalize, but the Selecao lacked fluidity and composure. They played panicked and seemed more focused on complaining about the referee's decisions than drawing even.

Sorry, but missing the entire goal area from 12 yards is not forgivable. Ever. Even if you hit the post. It is a big enough area for a pro to hit. Make the keeper save it, but never miss the whole damn thing.

In reply to: Are they saying that should've been the call on the initial PK for Spain, when the defender was only cautioned? If so, I disagree. It was a penalty, but Villa embellished the contact. It certainly wasn't worse than what Pique did--playing tug of war with the Paraguayan's arm. |

Germany has been the best and most exciting team of the tournament--even in group play, Die Mannschaft was dominant, their only blemish the result of an insane Spanish referee and an off-night from Lukas Podolski--but I'm tired of seeing the same old sides raise the trophy. |

I think that could have been called a penalty...but it wasn't an obvious penalty either

Good no call on the penalty. It looked iffy live, but the replay showed Ozil dangling his leg out in the defender's path. Ozil wasn't knocked off balance so much as he fell down.

Yeah, I wouldn't have called that a penalty, either. Didn't help that Ozil whiffed.

Spain won the possession battle in the first half and are doing it again to start the second. It's hard to imagine the Germans scoring by any way other than a counter attack if Spain keeps this up.

I wouldn't count out Uruguay over Germany. They get Suarez back and will want to show. Claiming a German pelt would be huge for the team that had to beat Costa Rica in an extra game to even qualify. Germany, otoh, will have to be careful not to have a big letdown get to them. But like Uruguay, Germany will be playing with a key player back in Mueller.

Just back from Vegasm where I watched the Brazil/Hollland game in the Venetian sports book; probably 40 fully decked-put Brazil fans and 15 extremely vocal Dutch. Certainly a crazy atmosphere. I got the impression that most of the Brazlians stayed up all night for the game.
