I am so giddy. We are less than 24 hours from the start of it and the excitement is setting in. My work schedule has been arranged to make watching the matches live a reality, chairs put into right spots and a trip to HEB for noms is in the future.

It's here, peoples, it's freaking here! Now to just get to bed earlier tonight to get up earlier as well.

Wanna know how I know that the WC and soccer in general is bigger in the U.S. than ever before? Okay, I will tell you. In the past I could go all day without having to worry about somebody spoiling a score for me. I could record it and watch later with no worries. Not any longer. I truly know that I could not go a day without hearing somebody somewhere talk about it and ruin it. It has happened with regularity regarding Champion's League matches and U.S. National team matches as well as other games around the world.

I am stoked at this. I am also sad at this as games are not played in our time zone.

I hear ya!! The watering hole I hang out at, which is one of your national casual chain restaurants as opposed to a place like Fado or Flying Saucer, has already auto-tuned the main tv in the bar for every game that is on during thier open hours. Any conflicts automatically go on one of the smaller tv's. And for someone like me who started playing this game as a little kid in 1971, when most kids my age did not even know what soccer was, it does my heart good to see it getting more popular with each passing year.

Chalk it up to overexuberance, shall we?

This is my 9th world cup. I am very excited. I only wish all the teams were at full strength, but oh well.

I have a feeling that a team that has never done so before will lift the cup on July 11. And it won't be Spain.

14 hours..... I have a ticker counting down on my computer....

Oops, sorry. I guess I had a bunch of focus needing to be let out.

Very fired up. We have a month of World Cup action ahead.

I am excited, too, damnit! Fortunately, I am a home-office slacker, so I have a flexible-enough schedule to be able to watch virtually all of the games live (the side effect is, it's going to be very difficult to get much done).

Though neither team qualifies as a first-rate side, the opener holds a great deal of interest. I generally root for all CONCACAF teams at the Cup, and Mexico always seems to advance, but El Tri will have its hands full today. South Africa can't match Mexico for history or talent, but it has been red hot of late and should be extremely motivated.

On that note, Mexico really got a tough draw. Much has been said of G being the "Group of Death," but A seems the toughest from top to bottom.

Here's to a great Cup! Hopefully, our 'Nats can get a result versus England and scrounge enough points to advance. Anything beyond that would be gravy.

I have not looked it up but supposedly the host team has not lost a match in a long time. One person told me never but I don't know about that.

Would S. Africa make the cut if they were not hosting? No, right? S. Korea would have in their region the year they hosted so they were not a slouch. Home crowd can surely have an affect but I don't know if that will be enough in LESS THAN SIX HOURS!!!

I am picking Mexico to win 3-1 but I am not typing this from a Holiday Inn. History is not with Mexico though as mentioned above. I too root for CONCACAF teams in the World Cup.

Ragged first half. The hosts should count themselves fortunate to be even, as Mexico could've easily netted two or three goals if its target man were anyone other than Guillermo Franco.

Seriously, as poorly as the U.S. often finishes, I believe Mexico might be worse. El Tri have have wasted several quality chances as Bafana Bafana doesn't look like it's ever practiced defending a set piece.

One would think that a nation of 100 million-plus could field a better (or at least taller) keeper than Oscar Perez, who stands a mere 5-feet-8. On the bright side, corner kicks toward his goal seldom fail to entertain.

Still, got to expect Mexico will finally capitalize early in the second.

And THERE'S the equalizer as South Africa once again forgets to defend a set piece. Three players could've scored that goal for El Tri, but the glory goes to Rafa Marquez at the 78th minute.

Excellent first match to kick off the 2010 World Cup ends in a 1-1 draw.

Mexico was the better side but squandered too many first-half chances. Conversely, South Africa was an entirely different team in the second half, passing with precision and finishing with authority. That first goal from Tshabalala will probably stand as one of the tournament's top 10 scores.

Ultimately, Bafana Bafana's distracted defending cost them and allowed Mexico to save face with a draw. NEXT UP: Uruguay vs. France. I'm going out on a limb and predicting an Uru-upset!

I called this in my bracket. Host country always competes well. I have SA advancing to round of 16.

Just back from the dentist. Funny thing, as various drills and dental instruments made hideous noises on my teeth, the word I couldn't get out of my head was "vuvuzela".

France/Uru should be interesting; notorious floppers -vs- the world's dirtiest team. What's the over/under on red cards?

S. Africa played well enough but it was more Mexico not capitalizing on their opportunities and not S. Africa taking them away. This could have been a dog stomping if Mexico knew how to finish or actually did. I love the excitement that S. Africa brings which is sort of typical for African teams. They are so fun to watch.

SURVEY OF THE DAY:

In the buildup to the World Cup, the media was fond of claiming that a win for host South Africa would be a win for all of Africa. Could the same be said of a French victory?

Very tactical, defensive match so far between France and Uruguay. Neither side is given much time or space in the final third. As a result, we're still scoreless 35 minutes in.

It's halftime between Urugay and France and neither team has managed to find the back of the net. France has enjoyed the majority of possession and the bulk of the chances, but most have been optimistic, long-range efforts without much hope of finding goal.

Uruguay's Diego Forlan had the best chance of the half but his 16- to 17-meter shot wasn't quite wide enough and was easily saved.

Neither team seems able to string more than five or six consecutive passes before turning it over. This could very well end in scoreless draw unless Forlan and Suarez combine for a moment of brilliance or France scores on a free kick.

Please God, ban those damn horns.

We're approaching the final 15 minutes of regulation and still no score between Uruguay and France. Just as with the first half, the French have held the ball the most, but neither side has scene a genuine goal-scoring opportunity.

I hope the U.S. back line is watching this match and taking notes.

Potential game-changing play at the 81st minute as Uruguay's Lodeiro--who has only been on the pitch for about 10 minutes--deservedly receives a second yellow for a ghastly, studs-up challenge that gets nothing but a Frenchman's ankle.

Can Uruguay's defense keep the door shut down a man?

Uruguay exhibits negative football at its finest (worst?) and holds off France to earn a 0-0 draw. On one level, it was not a very attractive game as there were few quality chances. On another, watching Uruguay bend and never break as it stymied attack after attack became very entertaining.

The opening day of the 2010 World Cup is complete and Group A, aka the real Group of Death, lives up to its billing as all four teams earn a point and keep their advancement hopes alive.

Early in the second half of South Korea vs. Greece. The Greeks gave up an early goal (6th minute) and are lucky to not trail by more as the Koreans have dominated.

Can't say I mind the Greeks suffering--they play the worst sort of football, in my opinion, and their reluctance (or inexperience) going forward is obvious even down a goal. There is no precision, no creativity, and they have no answer for South Korea's high pressure.

As I type this, a turnover gifts the Koreans with a breakaway and ManU's Park Jisoong capitalizes in the 52nd minute. It's South Korea 2, Greece 0.

The first match of Day 2 is final--South Korea 2, Greece 0. That margin actually flatters the Greeks, who unquestionably looked the least prepared of all sides to play thus far.

Well, that didn't take Argentina very long. Heinze puts the Albiceleste in front inside of seven minutes with a beautifully placed header.

At the break, Argentina leads Nigeria, 1-0. Man of the man so far is the Nigerian keeper, who has stonewalled several well-placed shots, including robbing Lionel Messi of a goal about 10 minutes before halftime.

The Nigerians have enjoyed a few chances, as well, but their linking in the final third hasn't been quite as precise.

there will be some African keepers with new contracts next year in top leagues around Europe.

Nearly 78 minutes in, and the Super Eagles finally notch their first shot on goal courtesy of Obafemi Martins. Meanwhile, the score remains 1-0 as Argentina can't get a second shot past Vincent Enyeama--still the Man of the Match, in my book.

Final in Johannesburg as Argentina retains its 1-0 margin to the final whistle. Messi could've been sharper, but he's still the most exciting man on the pitch. As noted previously, the game ball should go to the Nigerian keeper, Victor Enyeama.

Have to admit it was a disappointing match in terms of entertainment value. The pace really lagged between the 35th and 65th minutes, and the Super Eagles made virtually no effort to equalize in the final 15 minutes.

FIFA can't be too pleased with the results so far, either--just five goals through four matches. Good thing for the sport, then, that we have the U.S. backline.

Lackluster first-half showing from Algeria and Slovenia. Not many quality chances from either side, and neither seems capable of stringing together consecutive passes. One can only hope that the teams will get ambitious and make a sincere effort to break the 0-0 deadlock.

Another incredibly soft goal allowed in this Cup, this one at the expense of Algeria in the 78th minute. The North Africans had gone down a man a few minutes before but nevertheless enjoyed the run of play until Slovenia's Robert Koren takes a speculative shot from about 23 meters out. The keeper was well positioned to make the stop but misjudges the bounce and lunges awkwardly late.

Still the worst match to date, in my opinion. Absolutely no precision or flare; it's as if both sides were content with a draw before the match even started.

Another scoreless half of World Cup action. This is now officially a trend. All that talk about the new "Jabulani" ball being difficult for keepers to read, and yet I wonder if it's affecting the accuracy and control of the attackers more. Case in point: we're 6.5 matches into this Cup and we've still not seen a scoring strike from a forward.

But back to the game ...

Ghana has been the far more threatening side, but both sides are struggling with that final pass as neither goalkeeper has been tested.

On the bright side, the pace and effort in this match is far superior to the Slovenia-Algeria snoozefest from earlier this morning.

Ghana breaks the deadlock in the 83rd minute with a penalty kick from Asamoah Gyan. The call was deserved, though unfortunate, as the Serbian defender recklessly handled a cross inside the 18-meter box. Serbia was already down a man at the time.

The pace and effort from both sides has been genuine, but neither team has showed any crispness in fnishing (Serbia) or final passing (Ghana).

That Ghana finish was awesome.

Another match, another ... first-half blank sheet. Big surprise, right?

Holland dominated possession, but Denmark saw the better chances in counterattack. Only a couple of saves, however, as neither side could place their shots on frame. Maybe the next 45 minutes will bring some excitement.

Overall, it's been a very underwhelming Cup so far. Not much polish or creativity in attack. I realize teams tend to err on the side of conservative for these initial group matches, but I can't recall such a tepid beginning with previous Cups.

The deadlock is broken by another bad goal--this one being an unfortunate own goal against Denmark in the 47th minute after Simon Poulsen tried to head a corner out of the box only to see it deflect off teammate Daniel Agger's back and bound just inside the far post.

Netherlands 1, Denmark 0.

The Dutch salt the match away with an 86th minute goal from Dirk Kuyt, who tapped in a rebound after substittute Eljero Elia's slow roller deflected off the woodwork.

Despite trailing virtually the full 45, the Danes were toothless this half. Credit Holland's possession and pressure for denying Denmark any chance of an equalizer.

Man of the match has to be Elia, who energized the Dutch attack despite not coming on to the pitch until the 67th minute. His quick feet and deft dribbling changed the complexion of the game.

What a shock--a first-half goal. Japan gets on the board in the 38th minute after Daisuke Matsui's cross finds an unmarked Keisuke Honda at far post. Honda settled the ball at his feet and cooly chipped it in over the onrushing keeper from just a few meters out.

Japan earns its first World Cup victory outside of Japan with a 1-0 victory over Cameroon. I must say it was deserved; Japan had the better chances early despite only taking five shots during the match and then withheld a late second-half surge from Cameroon.

For all their hype, the Indomitable Lions were rather tame; they didn't exhibit any sense of urgency until about 15 minutes remained.

Later today--il Floparazzi vs. Paraguay. I'll be rooting for the South Americans for obvious reasons.

Is there any question who I will be rooting for?

Besides, I have a few friends from Paraguay and happen to really like Roque Santa Cruz.

Paraguay was lucky to avoid a red card in that first half. Aside from that, very happy to see the South Americans on top at the half. What a lovely header that was!

Goalkeeping blunder on a corner kick awards Italy an equalizer. Daniele de Rossi was the man fortunate enough to stick in the empty-netter after the keeper had come off his line to deflect a corner but could only wave at it after badly misjudging it.

The 1-1 score stands as Italy and Paraguay draw. The Azzurri created pressure throughout the second frame and deserved the point; they won't be happy with it, however.

I am not really sure why the games have been so tense. My guess is that the talent gap has narrowed somewhat over the past 2-3 world cups, and not even the big teams can afford to take that many risks. It has taken a lot of the spark out of the games so far. The games have been lackluster at best. The only group to shine so far have been the refs.

I don't agree with teams playing for ties expecting to win future group games, like Uruguay did. In fact, I think it will bite them in the ass on Wednesday with South Africa taking the first chunk.

Another insipid half of World Cup soccer sees New Zealand and Slovakia fail to score. The All Whites are outmatched at virtually every position (two of their starters aren't even on professional clubs at the moment), yet the match has been fairly even--a testament to the benefits of good energy and attitude.

The New Zealand keeper is without a doubt the worst I've seen. Dude has been out of position on multiple occasions, yet the Slovaks can't capitalize.

Incidentally, word is Drogba will play against Portugal. Wonder if that cast will hold up as often as he goes to ground ...

Slovakia breaks the stalemate with a fine goal in the 50th minute. Right winger Vladimir Weiss crosses a ball into the box, where it finds the waiting head of striker Robert Vittek. Vittek nods it down expertly just inside the left post.

There is some controversy, however, as replays show Vittek was leaning just a hair offside before the service.

Oh man... Slovakia kicking themselves. NZ ties it up in the last 30 seconds.

Stunning. Out of nowhere, the toothless Kiwis strike an equalizer just seconds from the final whistle. Centerback Winston Reid is the hero, taking a well-aimed chip and heading it inside the right post--an absolute shocker given that New Zealand had made very little effort to get a result until that moment.

The Slovaks, who were literally 30 or so seconds from their first-ever World Cup triumph, have got to be reeling from the sight of this: Slovakia 1, New Zealand 1.

Up next is one of the more anticipated first-round matches: Ivory Coast versus Portugal as the falsely advertised "Group of Death" gets underway.

Eleven minutes into the Ivory Coast-Portugal match and we've already seen the best and worst from Cristiano Ronaldo. His seventh-minute flop nets centerback Didier Zokora an undeserved yellow. Despite the scoreline, this match has been more entertaining than others. Both sides have been active and creative, but neither has been able to muster that final pass.

Talented though he is, Ronaldo is a deplorable pussy. The guy goes to ground with the slightest contact, and this too often results in a free kick or caution from match officials who should know better.

If FIFA really cared about bringing an end to simulation, it would suspend Ronaldo for a match. He's a superstar, so of course FIFA wouldn't dare it, but it'd sure be nice to see.

Random opinion: Ivory Coast has the best kits in the Cup. I'd call the color "Highlighter Orange."

The first "Group of Death" match ends in a scoreless draw. It began promisingly, but the defenses ultimately proved to be far sharper than the offenses. What a dreary Cup this has been.

Drogba saw two good chances in the second half, but both came to the wrong foot and he reacted with uncharacteristic hesitation. Can't help but wonder if he would've converted one of them had he been 100 percent.

Brazil 0, North Korea 0--halftime.

Shocker of the tournament so far. The Selecao has held the ball virtually the entire half (74 percent possession to North Korea's 26 percent) but can't crack the defense of Kim Jong Il's denizens.

The match has been remarkably fluid--just seven fouls called during the first 45 minutes--and there have been plenty of shots (nine for Brazil, six for North Korea). But everytime Brazil has a quality chance developing, there's a red shirt exactly where it needs to be. Simply amazing tactical positioning and discipline on the part of the North Koreans, who have also threatened on the counter.

The rest of Group G better beware--North Korea won't be an easy out if it plays this way against Ivory Coast and Portugal. And to think--FIFA has the PRK rated as 105 in the world.

Overall, Brazil is playing fairly well. Robinho has been especially menacing. On the flipside, Kaka is having a miserable outing and should be taken off the pitch, in my opinion.

Folks, you might not see a better goal than that all tournament. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

So, yeah, on that goal, Maicon--Brazil's right back, mind you--takes the ball on the overlap and catches up to it about three feet from the backline. Instead of crossing it, however, he unleashes a right-footed shot that beats the keeper to the near post, bends right, and bulges the far side of the net.

Only thing that makes sense is he must have struck the ball toward the outside of his foot. Otherwise, it would've bent left and flashed wide (or gone directly to the keeper).

If you missed it, be sure to look for a clip on Youtube. Sincerely doubt you'll witness a better shot during this competition.

Another superb score for the Selecao--a clinic in passing and finishing. Credit goes to Robinho for his superb diagonal ball that travels some 30 meters past four or five defenders until it finds the feet of an onrushing Elano, whose first touch is to calmly slot the ball to far post.

Bless Brazil. Just when this tournament was bogging down in the worst sort of way, the Selecao have come through with two moments of brilliance.

Best match of the tournament so far ends after a mere two minutes of stoppage time. Stunning result--many expected a cakewalk for the Selecao this afternoon, but the North Koreans thought differently. Despite the loss, that was nothing short of a heroic effort because I don't think Brazil played that poorly.

Chile 1, Honduras 0--Final.

Chile's first World Cup victory in 48 years came at the expense of CONCACAF's first loss in this tournament. Even so, the one-goal margin certainly flattered Honduras, which was outshot 22-7 and saw only 36 percent of possession.

Man of the match for me has to be Chile's attacking right winger, Alexis Sanchez, who created chance after chance with his deft dribbling and passing.

Overall, not a bad game, but disappointing in that Chile could not convert more of its chances.

Spain 0, Switzerland 0--Halftime.

Another scoreless first frame in South Africa. Spain saw 72 percent of the ball and took nine shots (to Switzerland's 1) but couldn't convert their dominance into points.

The Swiss are exhibiting negative football at its finest--there are usually eight to nine of them behind the ball the moment Spain wins possession. The Spanish began to get frustrated toward the end of the half, begging for undeserved fouls and PKs.

Still, Spain seems to be its worst enemy. Its broken through Switzerland's backline on a couple of occasions, only to squander the opportunity with excessive dribbling, passing, or hesitation.

The Spanish get caught pushing forward on a goal kick (seriously?) and a lucky touch puts Eren Derdiyok into the box unmarked. Iker Casillas takes him out (and could've drawn a penalty), but the loose ball ultimately winds up on the foot of left winger Gelson Fernandes, who can do no wrong in front of an empty goal.

Switzerland 1, Spain 0--Final.

The largest upset of the tournament so far. As well as the Swiss defended, the real story of the match was Spain's total lack of quality inside the 18-meter box. Whether a shot at goal or a cross from the wings, La Furia Roja's last effort was always wanting.

Wow. That was a shocker.

Watch out Honduras. Angry Spaniards heading your way (once again!).

Uruguay's Luis Suarez is a piece of shit. Seriously, he's the worst sort of soccer player--short on ability, and long on acting. He's been diving all over the pitch today, and his latest effort got the South African keeper sent off for the touch of a toe.

Absolutely wouldn't mind seeing this douchebag's career end. And I'm dead serious. Players like he deserve nothing good.

There was a yellow card for diving in one of the games earlier in the week, but I can't remember which one. Japan v. Cameron maybe?

I don't see how that was a dive. The keeper made no play on the ball, he hit both of Suarez' feet, it was a pretty clear penalty. Did Suarez embellish a little? Sure he did. But he didn't need to. It was going to be a penalty, and there was going to be a red card.

And the replay clearly showed him to be onside as well.

The first round of group play is in the books, and perhaps the biggest story to date is the general lack of scoring. In addition to most corners and crosses behaving benignly, not a single direct free kick has gone for goal.

That causes one to wonder if FIFA's primary concern is helping Adidas sell soccer balls and not ensuring the best-quality product for soccer fans.

I say that because the much-maligned "Jabulani" ball seems to have had a greater impact on free kicks and crosses than it has on goalkeeping.

We were told that the new ball was developed to boost scoring, as it is lighter, faster, and more prone to knuckling than the previous official ball--attributes that would put more pressure on goalkeepers.

In practice, however, it seems the ball has been a greater challenge to attackers due to a loss of control and predictability. And that makes sense, really, since there is such a fine line between bending a free kick over a wall then down inside the top bar and seeing it sky 10 meters above it.

A careless giveaway from Argentina's backline gifts South Korea's Lee Chung-Yong with a one-on-one against the keeper. His side-footed chip doesn't waste the chance.

It's a hat trick for Argentina's Gonzalo Higuain, who heads down a precise lob from Sergio Aguero toward the far post. Beautiful soccer from the Albiceleste today.

Higuain goes off for Mario Bolatti. Per the announcer, Higuain's hat trick is the Cup's first since 2002 and Argentina's first since Batistuta in 1998.

Total howler of an opening goal for Nigeria as Uche's soft free kick fails to find a head--or a clearance--and bounds into the 6-meter area and then into the goal. As a result, the Greeks are poised to crash out of this competition.

Technically, that will count as World Cup 2010's first free kick for goal, but it shouldn't as it was more the result of Alexandros Tzorvas' inept netminding.

Madness for Nigeria's Sani Kaita, who loses his cool after being provoked by Vasilis Torosidis and flails half-heartedly with his boot. There wasn't much contact, if any, but Kaita is nevertheless given a straight red and Nigeria is forced to defend its one-goal lead with only 10 men.

Given new life, can the Greeks come through with an equalizer?

The potential game-winning goal came after Vincent Enyeama, who has been nothing short of spectacular this tournament, spilled a hard shot from Alexandros Tziolis. Vasilis Torosidis ran on to the rebound and easily slots it home.

Enyeama has been fantastic but should've done better there.

Terrific match. Who knew this one would be so exciting?

Best day so far from a purely watching standpoint. Argentina got it going. Now this one. Fun times (at work!). And still what should be another good one later -- MX v. France has the potential to be wonderful.

Heroic effort by the Nigerian goalie. That guy is playing like an All-Pro safety or corner. Still not going to be enough or so it seems.

Greece 2, Nigeria 1--Final.

First two scores in Greece's limited World Cup history result in its first win.

Goat of the match--and perhaps the tournament--has to be Sani Kaita, whose sending off in the 33rd minute utterly changed the direction of the game. Up to that point, Nigeria was firmly in control as Greece had shown no sign of life. After the red, however, the Greeks ran the show and the equalizer was only a matter of time.

Credit the Greeks for having a killer's instinct. Once they went up a man, they never backed off.

In case you missed it, Swiss coach said he modeled his game plain for Spain based on US victory over them in the Confederations Cup.

Meanwhile, I am hoping for a good game plan for Slovenia. It looks like a must win match for the US. A Slovenian win and they are in control of the group. A draw leaves much to chance.

My guess is that Bradley will stick with same line-up. One change he might consider is starting Buddle and keeping the speedy Finley back for late sub. I like Torres but he doesnt seem to have caught the coach's eye.

As expected, scoring has jumped so far for the second round of group-play matches.

The first round of group play netted a mere 25 goals in 16 matches--an average of 1.56 goals per contest.

The second round of group play has netted 13 goals in four matches--an average of 3.25 goals per contest.

The Yanks' second-straight draw puts them in an odd position. On one hand, their backs are against the wall as a loss or draw in the third and final group-play match against Algeria eliminates them. On the other, they control their own fate as a win with a two-goal-or-better margin guarantees advancement.

The draw maintains CONCACAF's .500 record so far this tournament. Through five games, the region is 1-1-3 (wins-losses-draws) with Honduras yet to decide its second match of group play. With an angry Spain looming, one has to expect the Catrachos to be saddled with another loss.

Blistering shot from Wesley Sneijder from about 24 meters out starts for near post but takes a nasty bend to the right, causing the keeper to overplay its flight and ultimately deflect it to near post.

The Dutch have definitely been the highest quality European squad so far after disappointing results for Spain, Germany and England. Japan just need to beat Denmark and they should still get through.

The South Americans seem to have a stranglehold on the tournament so far but who knows what will happen in the elimination rounds.

Big question is if all five Conmebol teams (and right now you have to think all 5 will advance) and 2 concacaf (Mexico and USA) plus two or maybe three from African and Asian squads advance; could we see as few as six European teams in the round of 16, now that would be a shock.

The Dutch commentator, as you likely saw too, was down on the sides performance while the Wiggan coach said he liked what he saw. He said the Dutch were sticking in 1st gear because they have not needed to. They did not want to create space for the Japanese to counter or create. I think I recall that correctly.

The interviews with the British fans were classic. Some feel they are owed more for traveling so far, etc. That one dude who said he is ready to boo again cracked me up. They are pissed by what they think is a wonky performance thus far.

The French, German and Spanish media/fans must be going the hell off. There will not be lots of babies born 9 months from this week!

Asamoah Gyan levels Ghana with a well-taken penalty kick to right post. Worse for the Socceroos, Harry Kewell has been sent off for a handball on the line that denied Jonathan Mensah's shot.

For the second-consecutive game, Australia is forced to play a man down. Odd that, in both cases, the man being sent off was a veteran star.

The penalty was deserved, as Kewell was reckless to have his arms elevated. The straight red, however, seemed harsh. Was that the referee's only option there?

Ruud Van Nistleroy agrees with you. Beck's is top notch and a class act. The BS he dealt with from "fans" and media to include kidnapping attempts of his children is remarkable. He was classy and always performed to the best he could. He comes across to me as humble.

The WC is costing me sleep but it's worth it. Offseason my butt.

A superb long-ball from well inside Denmark's half finds right winger Dennis Rommedahl beating an offside trap in the Cameroon attacking third. Cameroon has been eliminated. Denmark lives on and essentially faces Japan on Thursday for a knockout round play-in game.

To quote the color commentator from the ESPN broadcast: "There's going to be a few drunk Vikings tonight, I should think."

I feel for Cameroon, I do. I always pull for African teams in the world cup (ever since Morocco in 1986), and I have a terrible feeling the knockouts will be devoid of any African teams. Here's hoping the Cote and Ghana can squeeze by.

A free kick puts the ball into the box, where it is flicked on with a header and then deflected off Cannavaro's leg before settling at the feet of an onrushing Shane Smeltz, who toepokes the ball to far post to grant the Kiwis their first-ever lead in a World Cup match.

Replays, however, suggest Smeltz might have been offside at the time the free kick was flicked on (prior to Cannavaro's touch), so it possibly should've been disallowed.

Nevertheless, Vincenzo Iaquinta calmly puts the PK past the keeper, who guesses left while the kick goes right.

Lightning strikes again during this Cup as New Zealand takes a point from the holders. Heroic effort on the part of the Kiwis, who were outmatched at every position and in every statistical category--except the score.

Italy tallied 23 shots--five on goal--to New Zealand's 3. The Azzurri kept the ball 72 percent of the time and took FIFTEEN corners; New Zealand had none.

Amazing result. For fans new to the sport questioning the merit of a draw, there is your answer.

The Italy-New Zealand was a great game. Italy hasn't impressed me that much this tournament - of course, no team has looked that dominant really.

So, things are going from bad to worse for Les Bleus. First, Anelka is dismissed. Then Evra talks of flushing out a traitor. And now, today, the director has resigned after the players refused to train as a protest and Evra gets into a verbal spat with the team's fitness trainer.

Luis Fabiano, positioned well right of the 6-meter box, fires a laser to near post that beats the keeper and roofs the top of the net.

The Selecao were a bit lucky to get into the area, but credit them for making the most of the chance.

Was Fabiano onside for that goal? Haven't seen a good replay from the side, but it looks like he might've been off.

Disappointing 45 minutes. Very tactical football from the Brazilians, and the Ivorians seem stuck in neutral. Not much creativity or flair on offense from either side.

Worst match of the day to date.

Brazil seems like they are on auto pilot and Ivory Coast is obviously playing the numbers game figuring that they need to lose by as little as possible to Brazil then beat DPKR by more than Portugal does and advance on goal differential with 4 points but that is a dangerous gamble.

They may be askeered of losing by 5 goals to Brasil which is always looming as a possibility. But yeah, Brasil is playing lackluster to say the least. Not much beautiful in their game today.

Self-made goal from Luis Fabiano all but salts this one away for the Selecao. That's a brace today for Fabiano, who appeared to handle the ball before his second strike.

Looking more like his old self, Kaka works into the box from the left wing and sends the ball across goal for a charging Elano, who casually redirects to near post to give Brazil three on the day.

F-Dub, you're probably right about Ivory Coast's approach to this game, but it has to be about the stupidest strategy I've ever seen employed against Brazil. The Cote would've been better off engaging in a shootout--at least they'd have a chance of some "goals for."

Incidentally, Elano looks just like a guy with whom I went to high school. Eerie.

An Oscar-worthy acting job from Kader Keita nets Kaka his second caution in three minutes. More terrible refereeing. And guess who won't be seeing the pitch in the Group G finale versus Portugal?

Kaka via Elano, this is much funnier in espaniol. It is much more fun to watch on Univision, even between games.

The Brazil and Ivory Coast players are a bunch of winers. I swear men cry and roll around more than female soccer players do.

Brazil seems to be a top team but I think some of these other teams could go and beat them. If the US can play good ball for 90 minutes instead of 45, I really do think they can compete and beat some of these top teams. Of course, they still have to beat Algeria first

Brazil becomes the second team (after Argentina) to qualify for the round of 16. This should be an ominous sign for any side with championship aspirations--Brazil seemed to sleepwalk through much of the match yet managed to stake itself to a 3-0 lead.

There's a lot of soccer left to play, but I don't see how anybody gets the better of this "new-look" Brazil.

I cannot understand Ivory Coast there, what in the world are they thinking basically diving to get Kaka kicked out so now he doesnt play against Portugal in a game where IC needs Brazil to win by 2 plus goals at least. In the last five minutes you pull this crap to get him kicked out whne there is basically no way you come back today. What a bunch of fools.

I really wish replay could be used after the game to retroactively lift a suspension from Kaka and award a suspension for diving. Replay can already be used to punish referees for making bad calls. Just think how much less diving there would be if every player knew they could get punished at one time or another. Even if you get away with a dive in-match, there are cameras everywhere, and you WILL get caught and punished eventually.

If all goes well, there should be 7 teams from the americas in the round of 16. Let's say a minimum of two asia-africa teams qualify as well, and the the euros will be in the minority in the round of 16.

Chile is the only conmebol team I would worry about at this point, they must beat Switzerland, no draw because they will be facing a desperate Spain in the third match and you dont want to need any points then to advance. In fact Chile need to beat the Swiss by a good result as Spain may be needing a huge result themselves to advance on goal differential. That looks like a group where 6 points may not be enough to advance all on its own as three teams could end on that if everyone takes care of Honduras.

Would be great for concacaf to get two teams through again like '02. Mexico need to win against Uruguay to avoid Argentina in the round of 16. Would be great if US could advance and somehow get Ghana avoiding Germany and Serbia though at this point any scenario where US advances is fine with me.

With the second round of group play being down to three matches, I thought I'd punch up another scoring breakdown.

First round saw 25 goals scored in 16 matches for an average of 1.56 goals per contest.

Second round has seen 32 goals scored in 13 matches for an average of 2.46 goals per contest.

The din of celebration from Portugal's second goal had only just begun to recede when left back Fabio Coentrao makes a fine overlapping run and delivers a pin-point cross to Hugo Almeida, who makes the rout official with a well-placed header.

Wow, Portugal showing that they are a real threat to win this tournament. That match with Brazil will be the most anticipated of the third stage of the group matches. Incredible display in first 15 minutes of this half.

This is getting brutal. A Portuguese counterattack finds (possibly offside) Ronaldo beating an offside trap on the left wing. Cristiano makes a deep run and then cross the ball over to Tiago, who blasts a gopher-getter that richochet's off the outstretched hand of PRK keeper Ri Myong-Guk and into the net for goal No.4.

So much for Portugal struggling ...

Think Sven Goran might want a do over on his strategy?

Liedson pounces on a defensive miscue, immediately turning on a poor clearance and roofing it for his side's fifth goal. This match can't end soon enough for the PRK.

Another defending gaffe puts Ronaldo into the box at the 87th minute with a promising chance. The goalkeeper deflects the ball into the air; it falls onto Ronald's back and shoulders before he volleys it into the net.

Minutes later, Tiago connects with a header to make it SEVEN for Portugal.

On the bright side, I doubt the referee will award any stoppage time.

Did they say this match was being watched live in North Korea? Guessing that would have been pulled quick.

Best half of futbol for any team in the tournament. DPRK just seemed totally outclassed just a few days after hanging with Brazil for 90 plus. I am not sure I would get on the plane home if I were a N. Korean player, mass defections in next couple of days???

Yeah, N Korea gave Brazil all it could handle, I watched most of that one. Maybe Brazil played down to the competiton.

Chile 0, Switzerland 0--31st minute.

Valon Behrami receives a straight red for an elbow to the face of a Chilean player. Extremely harsh decision by the referee that entirely changes the complexion of this match and, for the Swiss, the tournament.

Very bad call, a yellow yes but no way is that a straight red.

Behrami indeed was playing recklessly. Before the red, his arms struck the faces of two separate Chilean players within seconds of one another. Still, his behavior deserved more of a yellow than a red, in my opinion.

This match unfortunately is exhibit "A" of why so many Americans show disdain for the sport. Two teams diving and playacting because the ref is carding anything hinting of an offense. This is a putrid display by both sides.

This is mostly on the ref who has been horrible and has completely lost control of the match.

Meanwhile Chile must get something here or they are in a terrible position having to get a result against what will be a desperate Spanish squad with Chile down two regular starters because of second yellows today.

Chile win 1-0 on a goal that had not one but two players offside but true to form the officials who were terrible all game long miss that call as well.

Truly ugly display topped off by a clear dive in the box that at the last got carded. Too little too late by the ref.

Chile are on six points but by no means are clear to round of 16. Expect Spain to win later today and then if they top Chile on Friday and the Swiss can top the Hondurans by more than one goal Chile will go home in spite of having 6 points.

At this moment I hope Chile gets sent home.

FIFA will hopefully listen to and respond to the pressure by doing something about the shenanigans. We'll see but I am not holding my breath. If they do, we may never hear from Italy again. There, had to get that in.

Just got word from my sister that ESPN3 is now blocked by the powers that be at her workplace. She works in a lab in a medical University complex. While it sucks that the entire facility and complex (not just her lab where she is a Post Doc) is cut off it goes to show how many were watching. I am sure many of the people there are not Americans but still, it's kind of cool.

There are two Italians and one Spaniard in her lab who she says are less than happy right now over their team's performances and outcomes. The Spaniard just realized he cannot watch the match on his computer and has taken the afternoon off. I have a feeling a few will be doing this now. Sensational individual effort from David Villa earns Spain its first goal of the competition. One has the feelng that it's going to be a long night for the Catrachos, who have already been outshot six to one.

Honduras very lucky to be down only a goal as La Furia Roja has completed dominated possession and chances. If Fernando Torres could finish, this match would already be over.

On the subject of Torres, is he a true-blue Ginger or merely a Daywalker?

The diving is getting so old. Im a huge fan of the game and watch it year round, but this is really disappointing. There are certainly dives in the MLS and EPL but this WC is the worst that I can remember. Its a beautiful game but constantly trying to trick the ref should not be part of it.

I am in full favor of having the same ref that called the game go watch the video of the game immediately afterward and assign cards for diving. If your dive led to a penalty kick or a red card for another player then you get a red also.

So, the second round of group play is kaput. Here are the scoring figures:

First round saw 25 goals scored in 16 matches for an average of 1.56 goals per contest.

Second round saw 42 goals scored in 16 matches for an average of 2.63 goals per contest. That's quite a jump.

Overall, that calculates to 67 goals scored in 32 matches for an average of 2.09 goals per contest. If that figure holds, I believe it would be one of the lowest scoring averages in the event's modern history.

But don't quote me on that ...

Just found out that our third world local tv station is only capable of getting one feed at a time off the satellite so even though we have two local channels who have exclusive rights to the World Cup we can only get one match at a time during the simultaneous games. One guess which match this England ex pat heavy nation is getting tomorrow at 9 a.m.

The tv station is allegedly going to broadcast the US game right after but refuses to lift the blackout on ESPN or ESPN2 to show whichever match they wont be showing live.

Un fricking believeable. And they waited until this morning to announce this to avoid all the emails and calls. Bunch of amateurs.

Unfortunately, many of those streams are blocked to the Caribbean because of rights restrictions, all the ESPN streams are blocked down here and even the Justin TV and Channelsurfing.net stuff is blocked. Sadly the poor copyright laws down here mean that most sites block their feeds to Caribbean web providers knowing that if they do stream down here people copy, package and resell it without any consequence.

Katlego Mphela wins a scrum inside France's 6-meter area to put the hosts ahead, 2-0. This could get ugly, but perhaps not ugly enough to advance South Africa, which would need a huge margin for itself and for either Mexico or Uruguay.

Still, this development does put more pressure on Mexico.

The S. Africa scoreline has to mean both teams in Mexico-Uruguay will not be as attacking in the second half as they have been the first 40 minutes.

An inch-perfect cross from Edinson Cavani finds crybaby Luis Suarez all alone on the left side of goal. Suarez heads it down and in and officially puts Mexico on the hotseat.

Terrible marking from Mexico on that goal. As Suarez ran forward, his defender (Osorio) was near enough, but when Forlan passed to the right, the defender drifted in that direction and left Suarez all alone. Amazes me how even veterans forget their duties and start ball watching.

If South Africa adds another goal to its margin and Uruguay does the same, our rivals to the south will be headed home early.

ESPN3 is working way better than I thought this sort of thing was capable of. Should be interesting to see how the XBox+ESPN thing will work.

Starting to hope for the unthinkable for South Africa...

Watch for S. Africa to go all out here for goals in the second half. 2 more goals to advance so long as Mexico scoreline stays same.

Forlan has been in amazing form the past month. His services on set pieces today are really giving the Mexicans trouble.

Right now Mexico are ahead by two on goal differential but tied on goals scored so Mexico want no part of ending in a tie in differential as that in all likelihood means S. Africa will have more goals scored.

RSA almost scored a few minutes ago as well. Nice passing to get behind the French defenders but the effort to get the ball over the keeper goes off the crossbar.

Another near miss for RSA. They are pressing relentlessly. France is getting a few opportunities but nothing consistent.

Unmarked, Paco Rodriguez fires wide on a point-blank header. That's the Mexico we all know too well.

What a finish to the half. Gotta think that, at this rate, the Argentines will crack that Greek backline sooner or later. The Albiceleste have seen a whopping 78 percent of the ball and taken nine shots, four on goal.

The Greeks haven't even been credited with a shot yet.

Greece used up a lifetimes worth of luck and magic winning the Euro 2004 Championship in Portugal. Barring a defensive collapse by Argentina how the heck do the Greeks get on the board? Their only hope is Nigeria get another goal while they hold on for a scoreless draw.

Dont feel bad Gem we are getting the Argentina-Greece snoozer with nary a hint of updates on the other match. The announcers know that we are getting it tape delayed right after this match and are announcing as if it is only match with no updates on other match so we have only yahoo live to know what is happening not even highlights from Korea-Nigeria.

Finally! DiMichelis heads the ball on target only to have it turned away, but he immediately pounces on the rebound and boots it home to put the Albiceleste on top.

Usually I dont cheer for Argentina but I cant stand a team that basically decides to pack it in and play for a 0-0 draw when there isnt even a guarantee that would advance them. Cynical strategy and I am glad it isnt going to work.

South Korea seems camped out in front of a sloppy Nigeria defense but can't seem to string together the right sequence for a goal. Nigeria very aggressive on the attack when they grab a steal.

Another Nigeria one-on-one with the goalie and the shot goes wide... If Nigeria fails to advance they can blame missing some easy opportunities.

Through three matches (almost), Messi hasn't scored a goal. yet I think he's been one of the tournament's top performers.

How weird is that?
