Re: Road Trip to Dakotas

In reply to:

what path did you take roughly to create those 3200 miles? did you do a loop type route?

Hi, Zork - pretty straightforward to answer that:

Arlington - Grand Island, NE
Grand Island - Rapid City, SD
Local driving in Rapid City (Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park ,Hill City, Deadwood)
Deadwood, SD - Medora, ND (scenic drive through TR Nat'l Park)
Medora - Bismark, ND
Bismark, ND - De Smet, SD (Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum)
De Smet, SD, Sioux City, IA
Sioux City - Lincoln, NE
Local driving in Lincoln (to Omaha to go to Doorly Zoo)
Lincoln, NE - Abilene, KS (to tour Eisenhower Museum)
Abilene, KS - Arlington, TX

That was a pretty full ten days, but it did include the two days to visit my son in Lincoln for his birthday.

Things I highly recommend from the trip -

1) Mount Rushmore - go to the evening lighting ceremony, very patriotic theme
2) scenic drive through Spearfish Canyon
3) Theodore Roosevelt National Park - this must be one of the best-kept secrets in America. Very scenic, buffalo, and wild horses
4) Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum - if you've ever read "Little House on the Prairie" series
5) Omaha Zoo - excellent!
6) Eisenhower Museum - could have spent an entire day there - lots of good memorabilia from D-Day, plus his Presidential years
