Brawl in 1960 Cotton Bowl?

I'm watching "The Express" right now and just saw the big brawl before halftime. Did that really happen? Or is this yet another instance of Hollywood historical revisionism?

I'm guessing it's bs, since they also show him scoring the final TD, which he didn't in real life.

1960 cotton summary

It happened. Whether it was racially motivated or was just just due to the emotions of a hard fought game is debated. I was certainly not there, but I imagine race had at least soemthing to do with it.

There was race-baitin' smack from both sides.

At the time, the media reported only how the Texas players were slinging slurs at the black Orangemen, but left out the part about the slurs against The Galloping Gaucho.

Pretty ugly all right, no matter which way you cut it.

Just watched the Express myself. It was a weird feeling watching the horns play for a NC I knew they'd lose. I didn't care for all the racial undertones, but found myself cheering for them to win time and time again.

Syracuse was declared National Champion before the game started.

Texas beat the spread.

Austin American editor Lou Maysel wrote this in his book "Here Come the Texas Longhorns":

"The flap over officiating, which was the basis of the whole flareup, was quickly forgotten and when attempts to reheat the racial aspects were largely unproductive, the focus of the Eastern news media shifted to the accusation that Texas played dirty--a charge that was never raised during the Syracuse postgame mouthing. "

The Syracuse athletics director later publicly retracted these charges.

The movie deals the race card by Hollywood. I was 10, but remember that it was a huge game. Lot's of stuff still gets said on the field no matter who is playing whom. Davis was a stud that day; it was very disappointing to us. That was another day and time. I highly doubt DKR would have sanctioned the players to the tune the movie deals out.
