In reply to:
A Slovenian win and they are in control of the group.
Since the U.S. and England tied, the Slovenians are guaranteed of going through if they win tomorrow, regardless of the outcome of their match with England.
A draw isn't entirely undesirable for the U.S., but it would create a must-win situation for the final group match versus Algeria. Even then, our Nats wouldn't be assured of advancement--there could conceivably be a three-way tie for first with England, Slovenia and the U.S. sitting on five points.
Beating Slovenia won't be easy. For such a small country, they are very well organized defensively. Expect them to sit back and look for the counterattack. Though our backline is always cause for concern, I think this strategy could play to our favor because we are better than ever at creating chances. Ultimately, it'll come down to finishing--if we convert our chances into goals, we should prevail.
In reply to:
One change he might consider is starting Buddle and keeping the speedy Finley back for late sub. I like Torres but he doesnt seem to have caught the coach's eye.
Agree 100 percent on Buddle! Findley is more of a spark; his passing and finishing are far too suspect for him to be deployed full time. Another alternative would be to start Dempsey behind Altidore in a 4-4-1-1 with Stuart Holden at right wing.
I'd also like to see Torres on the pitch, and I wouldn't be surprised if Bradley starts him.

Mexico and France are underway in what is a must-result match for El Tri. Lose, and the Mexicans can count on a short stay in South Africa.
Can Mexico break with tradition and actually finish its chances?

France 0, Mexico 0--21st minute.
French backline looks suspect. Fortunately for them, the opponent is Mexico.

The French have had several set pieces already. Sooner or later, you figure one of them will go for goal.

C'mon Mexico!!! Win this one, okay?
I like France quite a bit but when not playing us or affecting us, I root for the Tri. So does Arizona.

SPOILER!
France 0, Mexico 0--Halftime.
Entertaining half in spite of the score. The two sides couldn't have more disparate styles--the French have advanced the ball deliberately, methodically, generally building up until they win a free kick or corner.
Meanwhile, the Mexicans seem content to hang back until France has surrendered possession, then they sprint into action, attacking the French backline with reckless abandon.
So far, El Tri has enjoyed the better chances.

SPOILER!
Mexico 1, France 0--64th minute.
The deadlock is broken! El Tri gets on the board courtesy of a 50/50 offside call that sees Javi Hernandez beat the keeper one-on-one. Not even a Tricolor could waste that chance!

SPOILER!
Mexico 2, France 0--Final.
El Tri have done it! Barring an utter collapse versus Uruguay, the victory all but ensures the Mexicans go through.
The result also gives CONCACAF its first win of the tournament. The organization is now 1-1-2 with the U.S. set to take the pitch next--at 8:30 Central tomorrow morning versus Slovenia.
EDIT: Corrected the start time of the U.S.-Slovenia match.

Hah! Hey, give a guero a break. It's been seven years since I lived in Texas, and nearly twice that since I studied the language.
Hope you enjoyed your celebration. It was richly deserved.

As expected, scoring has jumped so far for the second round of group-play matches.
The first round of group play netted a mere 25 goals in 16 matches--an average of 1.56 goals per contest.
The second round of group play has netted 13 goals in four matches--an average of 3.25 goals per contest.
That's more than twice the clip we witnessed in the first round. Will it hold? Sure hope so.

Two cautions issued already this match, and both of them unwarranted.
Just as I type this message, a third yellow is handed out. Not sure what match this referee is watching.

This official is terrible, and Serbia now have a goal and a 1 man advantage with 10 minutes to go in first half, bad news for Germany who still have a decent Ghana to go.
