Interesting comment by Barnes

He was just on Tirico's radio show and said of the Mizzou game they were terrible and he couldn't let it go. Said he coached angry for 2 weeks after and the team playing poorly was his fault. It stopped when he asked AJ to help him by stepping up on D which he did, very well.

I thought this was interesting due to the "4 Frosh" thread yesterday and what SLX had said regarding that stretch.

And FYI: I freaking love Barnes, always a great interview. Talked about how the administration was the main reason we have become a B-ball school too. Said (in jest) he would love to play the football team in a 3 game series...said "We would win, they aren't smart, or quick enough to keep up."

I vote Rick for president.

Larry hates OU, he was bitching about it this morning.

The thing I love most about Rick is that he says what's on his mind. I think he'd probably make a crappy politician, but he sure is a hell of a b-ball coach.

I wonder if he has come up with an explanation for the two weeks before the Mizzou loss...

Re: Interesting comment by Barnes [re: hookem2102]

I also heard the same interview. He had Tirico and Herbstriet cracking up.

His comments about the Mizzou game were interesting. He blamed the team's lull on himself.

He said he made a huge coaching error by "coaching mad". That Mizzou loss messed with his mind.

I know that SL Express has noted his displeasure about the team's play during that time. I don't disagree with him. SL was pretty harsh on Coach about the way he handled the team during that stretch.

Well, it seems that Coach has realized he was as much of the problem as the players. And now, the team (and him) have come out of that lull better.

Coach Barnes is human. He made a mistake. But, what makes him great is that he saw that mistake and made the change in himself. And look at us now. A dangerous team with a killer instinct. We may not finish this regular season undefeated. But, we'll play as hard and as tough as any team.

His interview was great. Tirico asked him about coaching at a "football" school. He talked about the adminstration's (Dodds and Worley) big commitment to the basketball program. But, he also said he liked having to "hide" behind Coach Brown (tongue in cheek).

We've got a tremendous man leading our men's basketball program. I'm gald he's on our side.

Understand that change begins with the individual.

Re: Interesting comment by Barnes [re: hookem2102]

Not until next season. He could maybe rush it and be back for the NCAA tourney but no real reason to do that, he'll take his redshirt. If he can get big minutes next year, I also heard Rick hint that another one of our bigmen may redshirt next year (i.e., somebody that has already played like a Wangmene who needs more time to learn the game, Pittman who needs more time to get conditioned, or Chapman who I would think is the most likely to earn more minutes actually since the Mooney/set a pick fiasco).

As for the two weeks before the Mizzou game, Rick had talked at the Austin Longhorn Spring Club about how frustrating the MSU and Wisconsin losses were but at least he saw effort. He didn't see that in Columbia, I don't think any of us did. We were dead physically and mentally, didn't seem to care too much either way. I saw a bit of fight against MSU and Wisconsin at least, sloppy play but some effort nonetheless. I think he was alluding to that. Then again, who knows what's in his head, but he's been pissed about that Mizzou game for 6 weeks and still won't let it go. I think that may be a good thing considering how aggressive we've been the last few weeks. I wish our football team let losses eat away at them instead of clapping for the other team... And yes, we are now officially a 3-sport school plus swimming.

Yeah, no sense in burning his redshirt now, especially since we have sufficient post depth anyway.

No offense to Pittman, but I don't really see this happening. He seems to have plateaued.

Why on earth do you say that? I have seen some really strong efforts out of him with quality minutes. He is a force under the basket and still has tons of untapped potential.

I agree that Dexter is continuing to improve and that Alexis would benefit the most from a redshirt year. But I sure don't see how we would be better off with Hill starting instead of Connor.

Re: Interesting comment by Barnes [re: hookem2102]

I suspect that Matt/ Connor would have been the PF/ C combo to start the season with Damion at SF, AJ at SG, and DJ at PG. We ended up having to start Mason and have a 3 guard lineup. Not mentioning Gary Johnson since he was out until January. Having Hill would also have given Barnes the option of redshirting either Wangmene or Chapman, although I don't think either is as raw as a freshman Atchley or Klotz (i.e. comparing Wangmene/ Chapman as true freshmen to Atchley/ Klotz as redshirt freshmen).

Meanwhile, nothing illustrates the shift in swagger in the Texas-OU series better than this: The Longhorns chose to continually kick off to a Heisman Trophy contender, just so they could beat him up. <Jeff McDonald, Express-News staff writer>

This interview available on the tubes somewhere? Love RB interviews as well - guy's a straight shooter w/ a harsh edge but a sense of humor.

I'd hate to see that happen. I love Alexi and Chapman - especially when used together. Our conference opponents our going to be SO happy when those guys graduate. They are going to be our version of Quentin Griffin. Pittman either - he's the only guy on the team they get the ball to on the blocks and he's been playing great ball.

I also disagree 100%. He was the only guy who came to play at aggy. Every time they give him the ball inside he is looking to score. He may travel and he may get an offensive foul but he is VERY aggressive now.

Completely incorrect. Pittman's play has steadily improved over the last few weeks.
