He probably wanted to leave last year, and had to endure one more year to see if he could raise his draft stock substantially. Otherwise, his decision doesn't make much sense. Best of luck to him.
Now the youngsters will have to cling together and mature quickly. I expect them to have excellent team chemistry in the process. I bet Kabongo will emerge as the team leader.

I think he's better than some of you seem to realize. It's not like he's just some bumbling Avery Bradley out there. I'd be very surprised if he fell beyond the first couple picks of the 2nd round. He has better passing ability than many have mentioned, and despite his lack of quickness, he still gets to the rim.
A lot of teams seem to be turning to the undersized shooting guards as the 3rd option off the bench. You don't have to be 6'6" to play the spot any longer, especially if you're only going to get 12 minutes/game.
Even though he doesn't seem to have the upside of a Cory Joseph, I still think he's a better overall player right now.

He just may not enjoy the college experience or life the way some want him to. I could be way off base but it's not for everybody and who knows, there may be other factors more personalty driven.
Is that fair?

In reply to:
You only have so many years to make $500K+ a year.
Major - But this is my point. How do you know JCB will make $500K a year, even next year? If he goes in the 2nd round, he still has to earn his way on to a roster, and if he doesn't then he may wind up in the D-league. If he goes undrafted, which according to NBA experts is a very real possibility, he would wind up going overseas or filling out a D-league roster. So, where does that leave him salary wise? I don't know the answer to that but according to InsideHoops.com - "NBA D-League salaries pay around $12,000, $18,000 or $24,000 per season, according to an NBADL player who spoke to InsideHoops.com." Apparently, the team also pays living expenses and some food expenses for some players as well.
Does not sound like $500K to me. The only players guaranteed anything are first rounders. Cory Joseph made $860K this year as the second to last pick of the 1st round. And he is guaranteed that salary for 3 years. That would be worth it if JCB would have that assurance, but he does not. In fact, he is being told he is a mid to late 2nd rounder at best, and most likely going to be undrafted.
This is why this makes no sense to me.

looks like Busterbrown has the answer. My question is, if he came back, would he have a realistic chance of actually graduating? By that I mean he would need to go to summer school full-time, 12 hours, then full time in the fall 15 hours, and then maybe whatever the minimum is in the spring because basketball is so intense in the spring.
Despite the fact that players make all-academic team, etc. etc. to me that doesn't necessarlily translate into graduating.
IF he could graduate with the above scenario, and he is not coming back so he can be drafted in the 2nd round, then yes he is making a mistake, imo.

Financially - long term - this is probably a horrible decision.
Fan popularity - long term - this is definitely a horrible decision.

Sullenger declares for draft.
Aggy Kris Middleton declares for draft.
What do these two have in common???
They each push JCB down one more spot in the upcoming draft. Unfortunately, these aren't the only two..........
On a brighter note :
G Kenny Boynton of Florida will return for his senior season.

Jared Sullinger's declaration isn't a surprise to me. I don't know how much farther down these other players are going to drop J'Covan, but I do know a number of so called experts say there is a real possibility he isn't even drafted.
