Monday night: Cats vs. Birds
|
| |
I think the way the refs call this game will have a huge impact. I was really tired of hearing "2nd foul" and "3rd foul" late in the game tonight in the Kansas game.
When a game is that physical, I think the refs need to call it tighter.
Scoring needs to be in the 70s+, not 60s.

I guess I will go for Kansas, because I just can't stand to see the biggest sleazeball in basketball, Calipari, win a title.

But, if Kansas comes out of the gate slowly, like they have for the past two games, they'll be just like Baylor, behind by 20 at the half and somebody can page Billy Packer, so he can tell us at halftime that the game "is ovah".
I thought that was Billy's finest moment as an analyst, and it was funny listening to Jim Nance trying to talk Billy into saying that team still had a chance.
Btw, was it Kansas playing against somebody in that game? The color blue sticks in my mind, maybe it was Memphis?

Being a long time Kentucky backer, I am going to pull for the 'Cats even against the B-12.
Will not be sorry though if Kansas wins.
The one tihing I noted when the players were introduced before the games saturday, nobody is playing a lot of true freshmen as starters. Guess that makes for some good coaching.
Even Kentucky has has some upper classmen playing as opposed to two years ago.
Barnes did his "best coaching job" when he had some juniors and seniors in the lineup as multiyear starters. He made his best runs with Boddicker, Mouton, Thomas and Royal Ivey.
Let's hope the current bunch as a few player hanging around for 2 or 3 more years.
<P>I dream of the day when there is adequate funding for schools and healthcare and the air force has a bake sale to buy a new bomber.

Was really surprised that Louisville controlled the glass so effectively against Kentucky. Of course that had a lot to do with Manute Bol at center for the Cardinals.
Kentucky is a pretty streaky team. they can put together some amazing runs where they look unbeatable, but they also go into those funks at times where they look bored and disinterested. Kansas will have to withstand the former and take advantage of the latter to win.

So, somehow I did really well on my picks this year. 99.7 percentile on ESPN. Anyway, I joined a local contest here in Knoxville from one of the sports radio shows. If Kentucky wins tonight, I get a free year of Lenny's subs and get to co-host the talk show one afternoon.

Disagree here. Kentucky is all about the freshman and sophomores--best player 1 and 1a are Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist, then comes soph Jones and Lamb and freshman Teague and Wiltjer. There lone senior- Miller has had some solid play, but this team is all about the freshman with two sophs.
You need elite players to make it this far whether they be freshman or seniors.
And to the Billy Packer quote, it came during the KU-Carolina semifinal 4 years ago when KU killed them and then Carolina made a furious run to make it closer.

This game looks to me more like 02 Maryland-Indiana or 04 UCONN-Georgia Tech than a really competitive game. In both cases the final score was not indicative of how dominant the winner was. Kentucky wins going away or more convicingly than the score appears. This is one time I would truly love to be wrong.

Kansas works their asses off to get it to 10 then just stands around while Kentucky bombs two threes to push it back to 16 in about 30 seconds. I don't get it.

Shaq's old shtick about being the "only, one true center left" might have been overblown, but he had a good point about the current state of basketball. Very few players truly know how to make good, strong, decisive moves and countermoves in the low block, and this KU-UK game is no exception. Both teams (and most notably Anthony Davis) are putting on exhibitions of how not to play post on offense.

I give Jeff Withey credit for the defense on Davis. He is the primary reason for the lack of offensive post production, not some imagined deficiency on Davis' part.
Davis could take Withey outside, but Kentucky prefers him down low on the offensive boards.

With all the money Davis is receiving from boosters, you would think he could at least afford to take care of that unibrow.

Outstanding effort by Kansas, but it appears to be too little, too late.

Withey's post moves have been pretty bad too. He played great D, but he wasn't playing D against a set of good moves, rather an athletic guy who doens't really know how to play low post. Davis would just dribble in one direction and then throw up a shot and didn't know what to do when he couldn't just outjump Withey. Granted, in fairness to him, he was playing guard for most of his HS career until he had a big growth spurt.

If you told me that UK would be held to 7 baskets in the 2nd half, I would have thought that KU had another one of their "runs" and pulled out the win. They just choked on every big possession.

what a strange game. Kansas still had a chance if they had any basketball brains, to get really close. The screw-up that bothered me was the player driving the baseline and jumping for no particular reason and throwing the ball away. The birds were down 7, and had a serious chance to put a scare into Kentucky.
I don't think the NCAA will touch Calipari, now that he's at Kentucky. Anybody think they will? Put it like this, has the NCAA ever vacated a championship win before?

I thought all night they were too uptight on put-backs, in particular right at the rim trying to dunk (but way too hard) and missed countless opportunities for those 2's that when they come, you just have to make them. So they never had that right touch on the ball. Kentucky played far more relaxed, you could see it in the longer shots even. Easy soft shots all night from whatever distance.
I've always maintained that games in big arenas presents a harder basket to deal with. It just seems things clang a lot and you never get the bounce. So you have to go at the basket with a precise touch all night, and Kentucky did, while Kansas never did.
I would have thought Self would coach his team into an exact opposite of the way they played all night, and that Kentucky would play the way Kansas played. The Wildcats always moved the ball to the basket as if they were putting Jedi controls on the ball, willing it to fly directly and smoothly into the netting without touching the metal. Some of Kentucky's outside shots flew to the basket on trajectories I could not imagine -- some with almost no arch at all and still hit nothing but net and not with a strong force. More like you had walked up and just hand-dropped it right into the net.
Jayhawks clanged, Wildcats did-unt. (that new teen thing where you say did-unt... for didn't)
Give Callipari credit. The fact his Memphis team dropped one to a Kansas team in OT several years ago, I'd have thought he'd pass on to his squad his anxiety to not miss out this time, but he had them playing like it was a scrimmage.
