I lived in Austin for about four years in early 1980s, a growing boy with a big appetite. There were some unique eating establsihmetns I dearly loved -- Conan's Pizza, Thundercloud Subs and Chelsea Street pub, where when you ordered two for one drinks they'd bring both drinks out at once. Me and a girlfriend, full, buzzed and entertained for about $20. The Stallion was good for starting out a night with the guys, but for some (good) reasons I never took a girl.

Las Manitas closed and the building was torn down. The Marriot folks who just had to build on that lot and just couldn't build on many of the several open lots downtown have now cancelled the new hotel project. Marriot has moved on; Las Manitas died.

I miss these from the SF bay area, I now live in Austin.
Little Sichuan (San Mateo)- what I thought was really good Sichuan style Chinese food. You could order Spicy Sichuan cold noodles (not on the actual menu) for like 6 dollars.
Amarin Thai (Mountain View) - I loved the Duck Curry and the Tom Yum was Yummy. I now wonder if the word Yummy came from Tom Yum.
Steps of Rome (San Francisco) - Nice and fairly cheap Italian food in the city. Always packed with hot ladies in the evening. The SPAGHETTI ai FRUTTI di MARE was good but I really liked the Spicy Cioppino.

You all did pretty well; I'm impressed. I'm convinced that if you were at UT in the late 70s through mid-80s you were there for the heyday of iconic Austin restaurants - at least the kind that interest me.
I live in San Francisco, and I'd trade all the foodie spots out here for a jalapeno cheeseburger from Mad Dog's, a cheeseburger platter from GM, a T-Man from Gary and that icebox pie his Mom used to make, an enchilada platter and a rita from the original Jorge's on Lavaca, a CFS from the Stallion, burger basket from Beans, etc etc etc.
To the above poster re the potted drink, the downstairs restaurant was the Red Tomato and I can't remember what the upstairs place was where you would get 'potted'.

Wasn't it Bananas above the Red Tomato? I had a fraternity brother try to jump over a chain in the parking lot at the Goodall-Wooten while carrying one of their "pots". He severed his jugular and very nearly bled to death. Had a bunch of nerve damage.

Harpoon Henry's at 290 and I-35. Good memories.....The piano player behind the huge picture. That place had awesome seafood!!!
I absolutely loved Sid's and that sourdough bread they had. I have many fond memories of going there with my dad when I was about 8 and eating the olives out of his dry martini.
Nighthawk, Holiday house, and Straw Hat Pizza was the [censored]. The only other I would add would be J.Brenner and Gyro wrap that I worked at in the Food Court in Highland mall. Good Cheese steaks and Gyro's. I have not had a Gyro cooked as good since then.

A couple of places not mentioned:
Les Amis. Not for the food, but just hanging out.
Virginia's. A dining experience like no other. Run out of an old house on S. 1st St. Your entire plate of food would be swimming in butter. You would pretty much get what they were serving with next to no choices. People who asked for a table would wait forever, as the little old ladies running the place let you have your seat and that's it.

I mentioned this to my wife, and she brought up Barbara Ellen's in Bee Cave for their home cooking (broasted chicken, cobblers, etc.). Apparently, it closed down 6 or 7 years ago, maybe longer. We used to take my mother there when we went out to eat with her. I checked out the street view on Google Earth, and it was just a vacant when they drove down Hwy 71. I don't know if I should show my wife... she'll be crushed. Oh, well.

As mentioned above, Virginia's. Those two old ladies ran a tight ship. No BS after eating. It was get up, pay up and get out. Only open MWF IIRC. Huge portions served on big platters and tea served in what looked like a gallon glass.

Rainbow Inn just south of Town Lake off Lamar. I don't recall anything too special about it (it must have been more popular with the Greatest Generation crowd), but it was popular nonetheless. They sold out and moved to a sterile stip mall near South Lamar and Ben White Blvd and promptly went out of business. Restaurants that do that have a death wish, but maybe they lost their lease at the original location.

OK, for you San Antonians, Hot Dog Haven, right across from old Varsity Drive Inn by the Culebra/Bandera split. Best hot dogs around. This was in the late 60's.
Coney Island, next to the Texas theater on Houston Street. Foot long hot dogs were 10 cents.
The old Pig Stand on Broadway..open trout sandwich..delish!!!

Sebastian's, a sandwich shop open for lunch behind PCL. Later became an awful eatery called "Old House Restaurant," then I don't know.
For grins, there was Zinsky's, the home of the "Substitutsky" until Schlotzsky's sued them for infringement.
Ol' Mossback Inn. The name says it all, I think.

Loved Raw Deal and the old Lakeview Cafe. Anyone old enough to remember Youngblood's for fried chicken? South of the river, on Lamar, I think.

Oh yeah, Fandango's. When we were in high school, they always had cute hostesses from Anderson and McCallum. We'd go and order iced tea and eat chips and salsa for hours, chatting with the girls. Didn't even know they had food, couldn't afford it!

About 22 years ago, I had a rooommate who had a huge dog--half Akita, half German Shepherd, and stood almost 30 inches at the shoulder. My roommate let Hank roam freely.
One day, Hank came home and there was a knock at the door a minute later. Some guy from Mad Dog & Beans had followed him home. He said they had been trying to find Hank's owner for weeks, because part of Hank's daily routine was to walk through Mad Dog's, grab a burger right off someone's table, and take off.
Primos were awesome.

I had a friend who lived in a little apartment carved out of a big house on Whitis below Scottish Rite in the early 80s. We were there one day and decided to go get something to eat. We got in my car and starting driving and debating and thinking about where to go.
We kept debating as we passed MLK, going south on Guadalupe. We kept debating as we crossed the river on Congress Ave. Bridge. We kept debating to Oltorf and headed west. We kept debating on South Lamar, then headed west on Ben White, then 360 back across the river until we got on 2222 and decided we wanted to eat at Bonanza on Guadalupe.

Everyone has helped to bring back some great memories - Holiday House, Shakeys (went there on my 21st for that free gallon of beer), the Staillion, etc. I, too, lived at Holiday House for a couple of years before I got married.
For late, late night, don't forget Hill's Cafe on South Congress - open 24 hours, and a great place for coffee and anything else you wanted at 5 AM. Great steaks, pancakes, eggs, and lots of biscuits to help soak up the alcohol in your system.
What was the name of the hole-in-the wall chili and rice place on the drag, circa 1970, just up from the Varsity? "Chili 'n rice - most nice! "
And some that are still hanging on - the Hut, Dirtiy's, Jaime's, etc. will always have a place in my heart!

I eat there a lot, but I miss the smoked poblano vinagrette dressing from Castle Hill. And Mirabelle doesn't change their menu much, at least at lunch. I always looked forward to what CH was doing with pork tenderloin,

That is just gross. I think though that the escargot at Louies was okay, just because of how hot the things were when they were brought to the table....not to mention the fact they were swimming in the best tasting garlic butter sauce...

I loved Abbey Inn.
My buddy and I were in there late one night and ordered a pitcher of beer, (circa Summer of 1980).
About two minutes later they came back and said they were closing early and we'd have to finish it or leave it.
We chose a third option which prevented us from ever returning.
I still had that pitcher until a couple of years ago.
