A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words - Muschamp

Here's a pic taken of Muschamp after the D's first series of the game....to say the least, he wasn't too thrilled with the performance.

As the D was coming off of the field, he ripped his headphones off and cut the side of his face. He never missed a beat as he was tearing into the defense. Classic Muschamp style!

- he can't handle a headset properly?
- Muck is really into the conversation, the "teaching" part of the game
- his Auburn defenses ranked very poorly in TFLs

I'm still not a believer until there is a game where a good offense is stopped cold with some TFLs and sacks mixed in.

I don't care about TFLs and sacks as much as I care about stopping the other offense. If his defense stops drives and forces punts, I'll be smiling.

Re: A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words - Muschamp [re: BeatYaEasyEasy]

BeatYaEasy, regarding the post about Akina not being that animated... I think Muschamp took Akina's anger to a new level. I've never heard Akina drop as many F' bomb's in a single sentence like he did in last night's game...he looked like he almost had to be carted off the field from high blood pressure. We all know how animated Akina can get, but I've never seen him get as pissed as he did during the game.

I think Akina also knows he's being highly scrutinized this season....

Re: A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words - Muschamp [re: Sifford]

yes, it's obvious he's not talking directly to Muck (keen observation). A team that is really a unified entity has players who know what their teammate is going to do, where he is on the field , and where each piece fits in the puzzle. Even if coach is lecturing your teammate, you pay attention , because it also affects you.

on the TFL issue.... a truly championship type defense wreaks havoc on the QB and makes big playes behind the LOS. You can just see Bradford having his way with this young secondary when he has all day to throw and NO FEAR in the pocket. TFLs are a big part of a dominant defense and separates a good defense from a great one.

Maybe Muck is horrified by the sight of blood? Maybe he is looking for a trainer to say 'Um...Coach is bleeding". Hell....Maybe he is just glancing away for a moment while Muschamp says something specific to the guy next to him.

Good lord....I'm usually a realist/pessimist but give it a rest. When the defense sucks I'll be one of the first to call it out but last night I saw good d-line play, good LB play, and a young secondary that Muschamp can't suddenly turn into upperclassmen (And don't say "Palmer is a senior!").

Barry Sanders was tackled for a loss a lot of times, yet he somehow seemed to scratch together a couple of positive gains throughout the remainder of the games.

TFL is a fun stat to keep but my favorite defensive stat is Points Allowed.

Re: A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words - Muschamp [re: Sifford]

I'm highly intrigued by your seemingly nonsensical theory regarding TFL. Let's take the 2007 team stats for tackles for loss and another for, say scoring defense. First we notice that Auburn ranked 79th in TFL, behind the likes of Idaho and Baylor - Baylor! - both of whom clearly have better defenses than Auburn. Meanwhile the TFL Top Ten is littered with powerhouses like Oregon, UCLA, Oregon State, Stanford and Hawaii.

Meanwhile, PPG Top Ten features defensive nobodies Ohio State, USC, VT, and Penn State; these teams also do pretty well in TFL, likely because, overall, the best Ds in the NCAA. However, in scoring D, Oregon ranks 40, UCLA 29, Oregon State 33, Stanford 65, Hawaii 46. Oh, and Auburn was 6th with 16.9 per game.

So there appears to be little correlation between TFLs and defensive dominance. To me, a good defense is one that doesn't surrender points. TFLs are nice, but meaningless if you ultimately allow conversions on 3rd and 13. And if you allow those kinds of conversion, you're probably giving up lots of points, which is what really counts.

Edit: Good pic, btw. It looks like he's got his fingers taped just in case he needs to punch someone in the face.

Ok, so maybe the defense isn't "great". It seems like some people are trying just a little too hard to find fault with what went on yesterday. The first game of the season... lots of positives.. sure, we made a few mistakes... the secondary was inconsistent, but they'll get better.

Maybe he was talking to Muck and beencounting knows of a lazy eye we don't know of. He knows that in this scenario Muck is making fun of coach's lazy eye by looking away. Sorry, this is about as silly as that post was in the first place.

However, if the guys are going to get ripped in the future, if that is what was going on, I say they don't get to be plugged ito the cooling devices (the Matrix) while it goes on. You suck on the field, you don't get comfy.
