Garrett Gilbert gets another year of eligibility

Nice to see Mack Brown still looking out for his former players.

With former SMU quarterback Kyle Padron moving on from the program, Gilbert will have an opportunity to compete right away for the starting job
Doesn't he have to sit out a year first, or am I forgetting something?

He has his degree from Texas, when you get your degree you don't have to sit out a year.
I also read that he got a Medical Redshirt for last year. He has two years at SMU.

Forgot that he graduated already. Anyone know what graduate program he is in now?

Yes! So happy for him and hope he makes the best of it. I even hope he makes it to the NFL.
Is that fair?

Doesn't he have to enter a graduate program at SMU that is not offered at UT? Are there any of those?

He graduates in May. He's a PE major, but I'm guessing he'll enroll in a grad program in business or something.

You can take any business "program" and call it a different one than the generic McCombs ones. SMU offers joint business ones in arts or law with business, while Texas does not. The fact that they offer the joint ones makes them "different programs."

It would be so freaking sweet if GG leads SMU over Aggy next year. I'll be pulling for the kid.

Texas has a joint law/business graduate program, again Horns11 you are wrong.
I don't think it has to be a program that Texas does not offer, not sure but I don't think that is true.

Both SMU and UT may have a joint law/business grad program, but if they are set up differently, I think they are considered two different programs.
And yes, it does have to be a program that UT does not offer.

Agreed.
I watched highlights from the 2010 Nebraska game on YouTube. Gilbert really made some nice throws in that game. The kid has the tools. Hopefully he will get his act together and have a nice career.

He was 4/16 and quite a few of the 12 he missed were legitimate misses and not drops or fantastic defensive breakups.
Having said that, however, Garrett's problem has always been his mechanics and his general feel of the game. A lot of that can be alleviated by solid position coaching, which is something he didn't really have at Texas. A QB going from Greg Davis to June Jones is like a football team going from being coached by Rich Kotite to Bill Belichick. There's just no comparison between the two, and since that's the case, the jury is still very much out on Gilbert. He's obviously gonna have to make notable strides if he wants to play football for more than 2 years, but he happens to be coached by the one of the very few real miracle workers that can help him make that a reality.
