A&M looking to renovate the tackle box

The Link

In reply to:

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- Texas A&M has hired the sports facility design firm Populous to explore options for the future of Kyle Field, including renovation plans and plans for a new stadium. The study for the 83,002-seat stadium will look into costs, construction timelines and other factors before presenting them to the university.

Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin says the school's July move to the Southeastern Conference has created "an unprecedented demand for football season tickets" and the school wants to expand the stadium to meet that need.

The Aggies expect any major construction to begin after the 2013 football season, but school officials say minor construction will be done to the stadium before this season.

Kyle Field was built in the late 1920s and was expanded in 1967, 1980 and 1999.

I'm guessing losing football games may hamper that "unprecedented demand" just a bit.

The stadium or the team?

Michael: I thought you wanted to be here instead of prison.
George Bluth Sr.: No. In prison, you have to close your eyes and take it. Here, you have to close your eyes and give it.

I prefer to think off the stadium as a toilet. The players are the [censored]. The fans in the stands are the stains that are found on the side of the bowl that hasn't been cleaned and maintained for a long time.

1967 = 2nd level of tackle box

1980 = 3rd level of tackle box

1999 = north end zone

The next renovation would probably be the addition of a south end zone to match the north, but I'm hoping it's a 4th level of tackle box.

Re: A&M looking to renovate the tackle box [re: YearOfTheSteer]

I think the third level was there in the 70s.

I think the odds are against A&M being a power in the SEC anytime soon, but it's not impossible. I think it is not unlikely they get to a level of South Carolina which historically is a .500 team with rabid support who occasionally has very good years.

The Aggies are smart to work from the outside in (assuming the appearance of a successful program) as well as the inside out (new coaches) to give the appearance of a contender.

If the culture there changes from the old tee ewe hating foundation to something less cult like, that also increases their odds for success. The cult is already being diluted somewhat by an influx of students who are not legacies or are not as enamored of every petty tradition revered by Old Army.

They'll likely fill up a stadium that has annual home games against two top notch SEC teams. Travelling SEC fans will buy more tickets than Baylor, ISU or Kansas.

I think it's a smart move by them. It will be interesting to see if the conservative mindset that has made their campus architecture so bland or downright ugly has enough sway with the stadium decision to go with the tradition of the tackle box look.

Any move by any team to any major conference would produce enthusiasm. If we went Pac or ACC or whatever there would be heightened excitement.
They're going to be fine in the SEC. By fine, I mean they'll be mediocre the vast majority of the time with some contending teams interspersed, you know, how they've always been. The only difference now is that they are taking their sponging to a whole new level and this too has generated a great deal of enthusiasm over there. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a Nick Saban statue outside of the new digs in honor of being so dishonorable as to worship the other schools in your conference who get things done.

Traveling teams only get 4000 tickets and they are the worst seats in house and spead out across multiple sections.

Are they expanding the basketball arena too? They did win almost 30% of their conference games. Aggy should be clamoring for more tickets.

It would probably be easier just to build a new stadium right beside the existing one. Then move and implode or whatever. They're basically in a cow pasture anyway. Don't complicate this too much aggy.

The SEC has a rule that all sheep entering the stadium must have a ticket.

Re: A&M looking to renovate the tackle box [re: YearOfTheSteer]

My Aggie construction engineer brother said that the only way they can renovate is to blow the thing up. Apparently when they did all of the additions from the 60s-90s, they never got anything up to code because it always needed to be finished before the season started. So the ground underneath the Zone and other areas is literally sinking from the weight, and they would never get the safety codes approved today.

He stated that there's a big movement to get the millionaire donors to pony up the "down payment" cash for a brand new stadium on the same site, and that they would play home games at Reliant for a year or two until it was completed. As much as I love DKR, it would be fun to see what a new stadium would look like from the ground up.

Re: A&M looking to renovate the tackle box [re: YearOfTheSteer]

TFA - One architectural firm full of Aggies and located in Houston did Memorial Stadium, Owen Field, Florida Field, Neyland Stadium, Jordan-Hare, Bryant-Denny, LSU, Sanford Stadium, Bryce, and the 1980 addition at the Cesspool of the Brazos.

Only makes sense that a firm full of Aggies, with tons of experience, would be passed over for a bunch of wheat field rejects in Kansas City. They'll probably design a soccer stadium with goalposts.

After a few years of losing, the demand will drop off and the current configuration will be just fine.

It'll be interesting to see what they do about "the sacred turf" of Pyle Field.

If they rebuild at the current site, will the Corpse set up barricades and keep a 24 / 7 watch so that the construction workers keep off the grass?

Or if a different site is selected, will they dig up the sacred turf and move it a square yard at a time?
