I thought it was a very good press conference, though I was surrpised no one asked about the current staff, and what Karen's thoughts were with respect to keeping some or all of them on board. But overall I thought it was an excellent introduction.

What a crock. Watching the presser, Plonsky said that she listed a job requirement of "recruited the state of Texas successfully". She basically limited her search from the get-go. Who else besides Aston was really going to be available, and fit that requirement?
I exchanged emails with Plonsky in December when it was becoming apparent that she was going to hire Angela Kelly of Tennessee as the new soccer coach. I communicated my concerns that she hadn't recruited the state of Texas. Plonsky said it was about "relationships", and that recruiting Texas in the past wasn't required.
She even threw out that "Mack Brown didn't have any ties to Texas" as an argument to justify the hiring of Angela Kelly.
I guess we'll see what she has to say when Kim Brackin's successor is introduced.

Big thumbs down to the reporter who asked a question about how to defend Griner; Aston will only have to worry about that for maybe 2 games next season.
Someon did ask about Mulkey leaking the info, and Aston said "I knew that was going to come up". She tried to blow it off, but also said "I'll be more careful next time", or something to that effect.

Yeah, you could tell that had caused a few problems. I also like that CP stepped in and said Mulkey would be more careful next time as well, no doubt she heard from both Aston and CP about that misstep.

I understand your point, and it would probably be fair to now ask her to explain the difference in criteria for the two sports. But, I think part of the problem is that a lot of WBB coaches have been successfully recruiting Texas. East coast, west coast, mid-west....Texas players are all over the place.

When will Texas figure out how to get a mike to the questioners on their press conferences? Viewers on the internet hear some unintelligible mumble and then the answer.
Come on Texas, this isn't rocket science! This has gone on for a long time now and needs to be fixed. Does anyone there ever replay these events?

had to wait til now to read the transcript. Sometimes working interferes.
Excellent interview. Glad we got a coach and one that has been here before. Can't wait to see how the team plays in the fall.

Driftwood, I have wondered the same thing about not providing a mike for the press conference questioners and had meant to send an email to Deloss on the subject. On the LHN you can rarely hear any of the questions so it is not just the internet.

I'm very hopeful about having Karen Aston named. Welcome home, Coach. Let's get to the conference championship game next season!
On another note, on texassports.com there are pictures of GG and KA back to back and the look on the faces of the two women could not be more day and night. GG looking up, smiling and relaxed; KA looking fierce! HMMMM.

While watching the press conference today, I kept wondeiring why Aston has such a tough time smiling. It doesn't seem to come easy to her. Hopefully, she will be able to charm recruits and their parents.

You are right Mooooo, I just realized that is something that bothers me about her, she rarely smiles. However, I've heard she connects well with players, I've always wondered how she does that when she seems so scowley, but hey, I guess it doesn't matter as long as she does!
